“Two Hulls or One – Which is Better?
”
This is a debate as old as sailing itself.
And now:
I get to see both
My home for 7 days. Like my boat on the Thames
Heels over
Feels alive
Lets you know what’s happening
Also:
Occasionally feels like it’s trying to throw you off.
From the Sunsail website we know:
Knowledgeable Instructor
Accommodation: you will be sleeping aboard your private yacht
All breakfasts and lunches will be included
Linen: Duvet, sheets, pillow, and a shower towel are all provided.
To learn proper sailing skills (excellent for RYA courses)
That satisfying heel and balance
Better performance if conditions get lively
A more “traditional” yachting experience
Why people love them:
Stability – hardly heels (leans), so your tea stays in the cup
Space – think floating villa: wide decks, large cockpit, separate cabins
Shallow draft – you can sneak into those gorgeous turquoise anchorages
Comfort at anchor – less rolling when the evening breeze picks up
The reality check:
Less “sailing feel” – more like gliding than slicing through water
Windward performance – not as good when sailing upwind
Marinas – wider = more expensive and sometimes harder to berth
Windage – more affected by crosswinds when manoeuvring
In the Med, where you often motor or sail short hops in settled weather, these downsides don’t always matter much.
Judy and Steve are:
Learning to move from monohull → catamaran
While I:
Am just trying to stay upright
Answer:
It depends
(Helpful, I know).
“On the monohull I learned to sail…
On the catamaran I learned to carry a full cup of coffee across the deck without wearing it.”
I suspect I’d prefer:
The stability of the cat
But love:
The feel of the monohull
