Surf

History

 Surf Sail Number 3 was orginally called Sea Miaou. She was designed by Linton Hope and built by Hart, Harden and Co, in 1908. for F.D. Lambert and C.T. Ricardo of the Upper Thames Sailing Club. She was renamed in 1910 and sailed by F.D. Lambert for a number of years. She was Raced in to 1920's by A.E> Lees of the Upper Thames Sailing Club. Ownership then passed to someone at the Thames sailing club around 1930. Little is known what happened until 1965 when Surf won the Queens Cup and again the next year  helmed by Monty Brown.. She continued to race in the 1970's and was consistently fast under the helm of Ken Mollart. Ownership then passed to Frank Dunn, Dennis Peters and Norris Williams, In ​2001 saw big changes in her syndicate, after Kevin Pearson moved over to Lady Jane. In 2005 Surf changed hands again. She was bought by Dieter Meier, a member of Upper Thames Sailing Club. After racing for a number of years the wood between the fibreglass began to rot. Currently (2026) Surf is at UTSC where she has been scanned and deconstructed. Owned by Richard Stent he is rebuilding Surf from the scans to make an identical copy and keeping a few parts of the original. Very little original left. Not been sailed for at BEW for at least a decade.

All is left is the keel with holes in it to reduce the weight. Surf is the longest of the A-Raters and now most the the damaged wood has been removed work can start on creating the frames or ribs of the boat. It doesn't look much like a boat at present.
