The Sunday was quite windy so having put the main sail up we decided to reef it. This took a bit of time so we missed the start of the race. But the wind was up and down the river, so we made excellent progress as usual across the river and virtually no progress up stream. We tried the same angle as the other boats but Paul at the Helm just could nor make any headway upstream.
Although the sail was reefed we were still cracking on a t a serious pace and when the gusts hit it was a struggle to keep the boat upright.
With a strong wind it took us only 10-15 seconds to cross the river before we had to tack again. So it was a struggle to take some photos of the other boats.
After a lap in the morning and so little progress we decided to retire and I spent a couple of hours chatting on bank to Don and his sister Allie about ... Boats. The afternoon race was no better the wind was even stronger and our progress up stream was dismal, so we retired again.
One of the members of the club noticed how we were sailing when the gusts hit us noticing that we were almost going backwards, so he suggested that we tighten out shroud lines, so we have. We will see what difference this makes.
