The wind was across the river from the far bank at 7.9 mph at the start gusting to 11.9 mph. ( crews for a host of different boats turned up and prepared their boats for the Summer Series races 3/4 on the River.
We are told that this boat can reef the sails whilst it is going along. Tat is way above our level of sailing. The wind was getting stronger so we decided to reef the sails to make it less frightening for Paul on the helm.
But in the shadow of the tree the air was calm and then as you cleared the trees, the wind hit with full force again. We were glad we had reefed the sails. It did take a long time but it was worth it. Race 3 started and we were immediately at the back of the pack - getting fast off the line is not our thing yet. We tried to keep up with the Solo but that soon left us behind so instead we raced the Zests.
